The search engine finds locations in a selected city that are best suited for launching a new retail and service facility. At the beginning, the city area is divided into several hundred or several thousand squares. Three types of sector size have been selected: 1500x1500 m, 750-750 m and 375x375 m. The smaller the sector, the more precise the search is. Searching by large sectors has its advantages in the case of retail and service outlets located at greater distances from each other, such as a bookstore, jewelry store or shoe store. Searching by larger sectors also allows for a more general diagnosis in which areas of the city there is a shortage of given types of institutions and in which direction to direct your interest.
In the next step, each sector of the city is checked in terms of existing retail and service outlets. Outlets from 12 selected types of activity are counted. These are: restaurants, grocery stores, cafes, clothing stores, hairdressing salons, pharmacies, florists, shoe stores, "Żabka" stores, jewelry salons, liquor stores, bookstores. The choice of 12 types of retail and service outlets is not final and may be In addition, some types of establishments may fall into two categories, such as grocery store and "Żabka". This is because certain types of establishments have become very characteristic of our national street shopping landscape and cannot be ignored. For example, Żabka grocery stores are a perfect example of territorially competing business because their customers are the closest residents.
Information about the branches operating in particular sectors is collected from various sources, such as information services on services, travel guides (eg Tripadvisor), various types of maps and, in some cases, personal inspections carried out in the field. Please note that the accuracy of this data is somewhat limited. There are cases of retail and service outlets that are not displayed anywhere on websites or on maps. As a rule, they are small and not very visible. Moreover, such outlets can be easily pushed out of the market by a new outlet that is clearly visible in the network and on the street.
Having data in the form of a collection of various types of retail and service establishments in individual sectors of the city, launching a search engine is a simple task. The so-called saturation index of the type of establishments in relation to the total number of all (different) establishments found in the sector. This indicator is calculated according to a properly designed formula. The institutions with the lowest saturation index are the ones with the highest positions in the ranking.
